ABOUT US
A SAN FRANCISCO ORIGINAL
Coffee Bar’s founder, Luigi Di Ruocco, developed his love of coffee working for his family business, Mr. Espresso. Mr. Espresso was founded by Luigi's father, Carlo, in 1976. Carlo was an icon in the coffee industry, credited with bringing the espresso experience and Italian espresso machines to the Bay Area. Luigi opened Coffee Bar’s original location in San Francisco’s Mission District in 2007.
Obsessed with craft coffee, Robert (pictured above) and Cornelia Stang joined the ownership team a few years later.
David Steele (co-founder/executive chairman of Flour + Water Hospitality Group and a Coffee Bar partner) used to start his mornings hanging out in the courtyard at this original Mission location. Here he and Robert met and became fast friends. Today, with Flour+Water as equity partners and David as Chairman, we embark on a new vision for Coffee Bar.

COFFEE
We take a Neapolitan approach to coffee and espresso, using beans roasted by Mr. Espresso—the only roaster in the U.S. that uses oak wood instead of gas. This unique oak wood roasting method produces beans that are low in acidity, rich in flavor, well-balanced, and leave a smooth, sweet finish.
EATS
While you’re still snoozing, our kitchen is wide awake, whipping up a delicious lineup of house-made pastries (muffins, scones, and fresh-baked breads), savory breakfast favorites (like breakfast tacos, quesadillas, and egg sandwiches), and healthy grab-and-go bites (chia pudding, organic Straus yogurt, and hard-boiled eggs).
Available in the morning as long as they last: artisanal sandwiches and fresh salads that hit the spot. Perfect to grab and go! When we’re not making it in-house, we team up with some of the most talented food makers in San Francisco’s vibrant culinary scene—because you & your coffee deserve nothing less.
